Northeast Tennessee Museum Association Resources

2025 NETMA Grant

Funding is available for Northeast Tennessee Museum Association members to aid with annual conference attendance, professional development opportunities, and on-site projects that will benefit Northeast Tennessee communities. This grant application is open to all NETMA members year-round (excluding officers) and will require a quarterly meeting presentation describing how the grant was beneficial to the individual(s) and their site. This grant is especially geared toward museum studies students and museum professionals in Northeast Tennessee.

Grants

  • Humanities Tennessee

    • Provides three groups of grants: General, Opportunity, and Tennessee Association of Museums Scholarships

    • General Grants: Draft Deadline: March 2nd
      Final Submission Deadline: May 1st
      For Projects Beginning After: June 1st

      • Humanities Tennessee conducts an annual grant competition that supports humanities educational projects designed to serve Tennesseans who are not employed by, or enrolled in, post-secondary educational institutions.

    • Opportunity: Tennessee non-profits with a committed interest in using public humanities projects to further their missions, and that have an annual budget of $150,000 or less. *See website for additional information.

    • TAM:  Humanities Tennessee offers a scholarship program for the Tennessee Association of Museums’ (TAM) annual conference held every March. This initiative stems from our commitment to provide opportunities for professional and organizational development of Tennessee’s museums and their humanities programming.*See website for additional information.

  • Institute of Museum and Library Services​

    • Collections Assessment for Preservation (CAP) Grant application due February 01, 2020.

      • A CAP assessment is a study of the institution’s collections, buildings, and building systems, as well as its collections care policies and procedures. The grant involves a site visit by collections and building assessors, who spend two days touring the museum and interviewing staff and governing officials. The assessors then prepare a comprehensive report that outlines recommendations for improving collections care.

  • National Endowment for the Humanities

    • Sustaining Cultural Heritage Collections

    • The Sustaining Cultural Heritage Collections (SCHC) program helps cultural institutions meet the complex challenge of preserving large and diverse holdings of humanities materials for future generations by supporting sustainable conservation measures that mitigate deterioration, prolong the useful life of collections, and support institutional resilience: the ability to anticipate and respond to disasters resulting from natural or human activity.

  • Digital Humanities Advancement Grants

    • Digital Humanities Advancement Grants (DHAG) support innovative, experimental, and/or computationally challenging projects at different stages throughout their life cycles, from early start-up phases through implementation and sustainability. Experimentation, reuse, and extensibility are hallmarks of this program, leading to innovative work that can scale to enhance scholarly research, teaching, and public programming in the humanities. This program is offered twice per year. Proposals are welcome for digital initiatives in any area of the humanities.

  • Tennessee State Library and Archives Grants

    • Archives Development Program Direct Grants *Application Deadline TBD  

    • Archival Training

      •  The Tennessee Archives Institute is a two and one-half day series of workshops on the principles and practices of archival management and records preservation. The Institute provides participants with an opportunity to interact and exchange ideas with other archivists and records keepers from around the state.

        • The Institute is intended primarily for county and municipal archivists and records managers. Historians, genealogists, county officials, and other individuals who work with historical records are also invited to participate. Sara Baxter at sara.baxter@tn.gov or (615) 253-3470.

  • National Historical Publications and Records Commission Grants

    • The Tennessee Historical Records Advisory Board (THRAB) encourages applications for NHPRC grants from colleges and universities, historical societies, local governments and other agencies or institutions which collect and preserve historical records.

  • Southeastern Museums Conference​

    • SEMC Leadership Institute: November 8-13, 2020

      • The Southeastern Museum Conference (SEMC) will offer a professional development program for future museum leaders that supports diversity and inclusion. SEMC Leadership Institute: Leading for Today’s Challenges has been re-scheduled to November 8 - 13, 2020 at The Duke Mansion in Charlotte, NC. SEMC will partner with the Association of African American Museums (AAAM) to pilot a new Leadership Institute clearly focused on leadership training for staff of small- and mid-sized institutions.

      • Jekyll Island Management Institute January 2021

        • The Jekyll Island Management Institute (JIMI) seeks to provide affordable management training to museum professionals.  At JIMI, participants have the opportunity to learn current methods in the field and build networks with other museum professionals.  Faculty members provide subject area expertise and practical approaches to administrative challenges.

  • National Heritage Responders 

    • Foundation for Advancement in Conservation (FAIC) offers several grants and scholarships to promote access to professional development, outreach to the public, and support research and publications. Explore the variety of funding opportunities to find support for your project.

  • National Association of Government Archives & Records Administrators (NAGARA)

    • The National Association of Government Archives and Records Administrators (NAGARA) is a professional association dedicated to the improvement of federal, state, and local government records and information management and the professional development of government records administrators and archivists. This certificate program was created to recognize local government officials’ achievements in obtaining a knowledge base to help them more effectively care for and manage their records.

Exhibit Resources

  • Southeastern Museums Conference​

    • SEMC is launching an Exhibition Exchange Resource. This resource lists exhibitions that may be exchanged by SEMC members with no loan fees, exhibitions that can be rented from members’ institutions, and a partnership development section. The listing will include contact information for the institutions participating in the Exhibition Exchange. SEMC Member Institutions may post an exhibition or request an object on the Exhibition Exchange.

  • Locate Arts

    • Tri-Star Arts (Locate.Arts.org) serves Tennessee by spotlighting and growing the contemporary visual art scenes in each region and fostering a unified statewide art scene. Our programs promote art dialogue between the different cities in the state, and between the state and the nation.
